Beitragvon Ingeburg am Mo, 05.Feb 2007, 20:12

Hallo Richard,

1. What do you think is the ralationship between Conny and Silke? Explain.
2. What was Conny’s last job and whatis she doingnow?
3. Why was she embarrassed?
4. What do you think is meant by “Chequebook journalism” ?
5. How did the critics in the studio reakt to the newspaper journalist?
6. How is Conny trying to make progress with the sitar?
7. Why did her doorbell ring at the weekend?
8. Why did Conny find it difficult to react?
9. Why is it likely that Conny and Silke will soon see each other again?
10. What is the link betewwn Conny’s lob and Silke’s job?

1.
I think they are quite close (stehen sich sehr nahe?). Conny ends her letter with “lots of love” and this salutation form in letters) is very intimate.. Conny tells Silke also very personal details about her professional situation and daily life. From this it follows that they must be friends. I also think that they were once colleagues because they both work for the media.

2.
Conny used to work for a local newspaper in Sheffield and now she is working as a secretary for a producer with BBC-Television.

3.
Conny was embarrassed because one of her colleagues pressed the wrong switch during the “Ten O’Clock News” /while the news was being broadcast (bedeutet beides das selbe?) das zweite ist genauer
and so the viewers saw - instead of a serious report from their correspondent in Japan - about fifteen seconds of a sex scene from a soap opera.

4.
“Chequebook journalism” means the practice of journalists paying people large amounts of moneyto get them to disclose personal or private information for a newspaper story.

5.
Thecritics in the studio have ? accused his paper and reacted very emotionally. They shouted and screamed and argued against the methods of the press for earning bigger profits and appealed to their morale. It was very noisy.

6.
She practises a lot - also by listening to a lot of new raga CD’s and has lessons.

7.
Her doorbell rang because she had turned up the volume of the music and a neighbour
from upstairs complained about the noise and about the kind of music.

8.
Because the neighbour went on and on with his complaints and she didn’t know
what to say. Also she didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, because he
thought that it was her playing the sitar and not the CD-player.

9.
Conny’s boss will possibly be flying to Berlin the following month and he’d promised to
take her with him on the business trip. We assume that Silke lives in Berlin and so there would be an opportunity to meet Conny.

10.
Silke apparently still works for a publishing company and Conny for a TV producer.
Thus the link between their jobs is the media-sector, with Silke in the print-media and
Conny in the TV-business.
