The television crews went into Union, South Carolina, because there was the trial of Susan smith. The effect of the alliteration is to read the sentence easier and to make it more interesting. The intention of the writer why he used an alliteration is to concetrate the reader on these words and to underline the behaviour of the crews.

dein Text sit schon ziemlich gut. Du gast simile und alliteration gefunden und funktionalisiert.
Man könnte bei "caravaned" noch eine Metapher finden, also die bildhafte Übertragung aus einem anderen Bereich. Das verleiht dem Ganzen einen plastischen, etwas komischen Aspekt und rückt es ins Feld des "mass entertainment". Bei "thousanfs of dollars" kann man ein exaggeration" bemerken, bei "advance team drängt sich mir der Vergleich-metaphorisch- zu einer militärischen Aktion auf (advance=Vorhut").
